How do you feel about the concept of 'coming out'?

I like the concept of 'coming out'. It gives us  time to figure ourselves out and when the time is ready, we get to be open about. Even in the future if it is more acceptable to be a part of the LGBTQ+ community, the phrase will still most likely to be used to tell people of what branch of the community they are a part of. The concept of coming out is pretty dumb. Straight isn’t the normal, and it shouldn’t be ‘straight until otherwise’. Oliver/Male/16/Australia

I really dislike the idea that heterosexuality is the norm, and that anyone who doesn’t identify that way has to say it outright, so people don’t assume otherwise. Coming out is a terrifying necessity for a lot of people in the LGBTQ+ community, and it would be fantastic if it wasn’t a necessary thing. Sarah/Female/20/Australia

I feel like putting that much importance on sexuality is just weird in general. Like, what if I said "I'm attracted to redheads,"? No one cares, right? Whereas if I say "I'm attracted to people of my gender," I get a whole variety of wild reactions. I think that it's dumb that you don't have to 'come out' as attracted to redheads but you do have to 'come out' as LGBTQ+. I think it's dumb that you don't have to 'come out' as straight but you do have to 'come out' as LGBTQ+. Madeline/Female/17/Australia

The concept of coming out  is an odd thing, generally. The LGBTQ+ community shouldn't feel as if that is a necessary thing. Regardless, it is a movement of some sort that enables more and more people to be unafraid and confident in owning themselves and that is pretty cool. Alexandrea/Female/18/USA

Coming out is a personal choice, though when everyone sees the “default” as heterosexual and cisgender, coming out feels more necessary in order to correct people’s incorrect automatic assumptions about who you are. I wish coming out weren’t such a big deal but with how society is at this point in time, it can be a big deal. Harmon/Male/20/USA
